My latest conquest in the
reading world is a book called Divergent, by Veronica Roth. I originally heard about this book through
one of my favorite YouTubers Amarixe, as she had just finished reading the book
and had posted a video response to the novel.
She had made the story sound so intriguing, and I had heard so many
great things about the story, not to mention that it is similar to The Hunger
Games in many ways, so I thought I’d give this book a try. And I was not disappointed.
At its core, the setting
of Divergent is very much like the world of The Hunger Games. Divergent is set in a futuristic world that
is now broken up into 5 ‘factions’- Abnegation, Dauntless, Candor, Amity, and
Erudite. At the age of 16, each
individual is asked to choose which faction they would like to become a member
of. They may either choose to remain in
the faction in which they were born into and remain with their families, or
they may choose to transfer factions and be cut off from their families.
The main character of the
novel Beatrice, or Tris, as she becomes known, was born into the Abnegation faction
but at her own choosing ceremony, chooses to transfer into the Dauntless
faction. Through much of the novel you
follow Tris on her journey through initiation into her new faction as she learns
to become brave and to become a fighter, all while trying to remain in the top
ranks so that she does not become cut from the list of initiates and forced to
live factionless.
While all this is
happening, Tris is also becoming romantically involved with her trainer and
supervisor in Dauntless, a mysterious man named Four. And to complicate things further, Tris soon
discovers that the Dauntless faction leaders are not the most upstanding
citizens.
