TV Talk: Mad Men Season 4, Episode 1 “Public Relations”

So here we are.  Season 4 of the popular tv show.  I admit it’s taken me some time to get into the show, but now that I finally have, I’m absolutely hooked.  Are you hooked yet?

For those of you unfamiliar with the show, the plot revolves around powerful men in New York City in the 1960s who work in an ad agency.  The show details their work successes and failures, and their everyday lives outside of work.  If you haven’t seen the show before, I encourage you to check it out.  It’s a great show!  Some people find it to start off slow, but once you see several episodes, the plot really picks up and pulls you in.

One of the most distinctive moments in this episode is the scene of Don now living alone as a result of the fallout with Betty in the third season finale.  While Don is powerful enough at work, it becomes clear how helpless he is in domestic manners, yet he still has his ‘game’ while dating.

I don’t want to spoil the rest of the plot of the episode for you, especially for those of you who are watching other parts of the show and have not yet made it to this point, but I will tell you that this is probably one of the better season premiers as it shows such a drastic change from the last season finale.

Overall, this episode is a classic example of why I love this show so much.  It shows the mens’ wild and daring personalities, as well as their extravagant lifestyles that they live.

Working at Target: the Experience

For those of you that don’t know, this summer I’ve had two jobs- working at Bath and Body works, and working at Target, where I’ve worked since I was sixteen years old.  As I write this, I am sitting at my current job – the Target fitting room.  The best part of the job?  The down time.  This, ironically, is also the worst, because we are not supposed to be doing anything during this time.  Yes, right now I’m breaking the rules.  Oh well.

What does this particular task involve exactly?  It means I get to answer phone calls, hand out numbers so “guests” (or customers) can go try clothing on, and sort through clothing to be put back out on the floor.  While the job itself can be disgusting at times, I at least have the benefit of being able to sit down once I’ve finished my tasks, unlike my coworkers.

But while they often are the source of my complaints, and the work-related migraines that I often get, the customers, or “guests,” as Target calls them, have the potential to be the most entertaining part of my job.

What do I do when I’m not spending my time working in the fitting room?  Running around on the sales floor in an attempt to keep it organized and clean.  And believe me, this is no easy feat.  While the task sounds simple, you learn something very quickly when doing this job: people are slobs.  When shopping, people could care less that it took you an hour to fold that table of shirts to make it look perfect and organized by size and color; they’ll just throw the shirts around just to get the one item that they want.  People will put items where they don’t belong, just so they are not inconvenienced, will throw things on the floor and treat the employees as if they are their own personal shoppers.

But despite all of the negative that comes with being on the sales floor, it has given me the opportunity to develop friendships with the people that I work with.  Working on the floor with other people allows me to work with another person, where in the fitting room, I’m all by myself.  At work I’ve made some incredibly close friends, some of whom I still speak with today.

As I come up on 5-years at Target mark, I’m still shocked at how long I’ve been with the same company and store.  Never did I expect that I’d be working there when I originally got the job while in high school.   The experience has definitely had its ups and downs, but at the end of the day, this type of job is not going to be my career, it’s just a job.

Book Talk: Divergent

My latest conquest in the reading world is a book called Divergent, by Veronica Roth.  I originally heard about this book through one of my favorite YouTubers Amarixe, as she had just finished reading the book and had posted a video response to the novel.  She had made the story sound so intriguing, and I had heard so many great things about the story, not to mention that it is similar to The Hunger Games in many ways, so I thought I’d give this book a try.  And I was not disappointed.

At its core, the setting of Divergent is very much like the world of The Hunger Games.  Divergent is set in a futuristic world that is now broken up into 5 ‘factions’- Abnegation, Dauntless, Candor, Amity, and Erudite.  At the age of 16, each individual is asked to choose which faction they would like to become a member of.  They may either choose to remain in the faction in which they were born into and remain with their families, or they may choose to transfer factions and be cut off from their families.

The main character of the novel Beatrice, or Tris, as she becomes known, was born into the Abnegation faction but at her own choosing ceremony, chooses to transfer into the Dauntless faction.  Through much of the novel you follow Tris on her journey through initiation into her new faction as she learns to become brave and to become a fighter, all while trying to remain in the top ranks so that she does not become cut from the list of initiates and forced to live factionless.

While all this is happening, Tris is also becoming romantically involved with her trainer and supervisor in Dauntless, a mysterious man named Four.  And to complicate things further, Tris soon discovers that the Dauntless faction leaders are not the most upstanding citizens.

Will you be reading Divergent?  Have you read Divergent?  Let me know in the comments below!  I would love to hear your thoughts on the novel, because I absolutely loved it!
